The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) had said figures which were published on Tuesday 3 March 2020 on staffing levels in NHS Scotland ‘continue to cause concern’ as demand often outstrips supply and vacancies persist.

Currently there are 165,909 staff employed by NHS Scotland, which is an increase of 3.4% (5,385) over the last five years, with nursing and midwifery experiencing a 0.8% annual increase to 60,651 whole time equivalent (WTE) staff.
