Prime Minister Boris Johnson orders urgent action to improve vaccination uptake after more than 230 cases of measles were reported in the UK during first quarter of 2019.
Urgent action to increase the number of children and young people receiving potentially life-saving vaccination is to be set out by Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
Although there is still a high level of confidence in the UK’s world-leading vaccination programme, with uptake higher than 90% for the majority of childhood immunisations, there has been a small but steady decline in recent years. It means that the UK no longer holds its ‘measles free’ status with the World Health Organisation (WHO). This change comes three years after the virus was initially eliminated in the UK.
