In celebration of World Rare Disease Day, held on Saturday 29 February 2020, NHS England has struck a deal to fund possibly life-changing treatment for people throughout the UK who suffer from rare health conditions which can cause repeated bouts of fever, joint pain and swelling.
New Treatment
NHS England said the treatment had been approved to help a small group of people who ‘suffer in silence’ with something called Periodic Fever Syndrome (PFS), a group of rare genetic conditions where the sufferer’s immune system overreacts, which in turn causes frequent inflammation ‘flares’ involving chest or joint pains, headaches, mouth ulcers and a skin rash.
