The private catering provider responsible for supplying a fifth of all hot meals served to hospital patients in England, Scotland and Wales has branded health concerns over frozen meals a ‘myth’.
Paul Freeston, Chief Executive of Apetito, was responding to fresh calls from campaigners to cut frozen food in hospitals following a listeria outbreak last April which affected eight NHS hospitals and resulted in the deaths of six patients. In this instance, the outbreak was traced back to pre-packed sandwiches and salads linked to the Good Food Chain, leading many to question whether the NHS relies too heavily on mass-produced meals.
Speaking to the Telegraph, Mr Freeston refuted those claims, stating:
