With COVID-19 placing considerable strain on healthcare systems globally, the World Health Organization (WHO) has issued new guidance intended to help countries maintain essential services during the pandemic.
According to WHO, previous outbreaks – such as the 2014-16 Ebola epidemic – have shown that healthcare failures stemming from an overstretched service can have a dramatic impact on the number of non-epidemic related deaths. In the case of the West African Ebola outbreak, there were more excess deaths from measles, malaria, HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis than there were from the virus itself.
